Why Fear Doesn't Play Fair
Here's the brutal truth: your brain is wired to keep you alive, not to help you stomp a backside 360 off a five-stair. The amygdala — the part of your brain that processes threat — doesn't distinguish between "this could actually kill me" and "this is scary but totally within my ability." It fires the same alarm bells either way. Your heart rate spikes, your muscles tighten, your focus narrows. That's not weakness. That's evolution doing its job.

Dr. Martin recommends what she calls "commitment windows" — a technique where you give yourself a strict, short timeframe to either go or walk away entirely. "Standing at the top of something for ten minutes does more damage than good," she explains. "The overthinking creates a feedback loop. Set a window — maybe two attempts — and make a full commitment on each one. If it's not happening today, walk away with intention, not defeat. There's a difference."
Practical Moves for Getting Out of Your Head

Shrink the trick, not your ambition. If you're blocked on a full send, strip it back to the smallest version that still scares you a little. Not the kiddie version — just one step behind the wall you've hit. Build momentum from there. Confidence is cumulative.
Use a physical reset cue. A lot of athletes develop a specific physical routine — a breath pattern, a shoulder roll, a specific phrase — that signals to their nervous system that it's time to switch from threat-assessment mode to execution mode. It sounds almost too simple, but consistent pre-trick rituals actually help regulate your arousal level and cue focus.
Visualize the full trick, not just the landing. Most people visualize the outcome they want — stomping it clean, riding away stoked. But research suggests that running through the entire movement in your mind, including the approach and commitment phase, is more effective at priming your motor system. You're rehearsing the go, not just the result.
Talk about it out loud. This one's underrated in skate and surf culture, where there's still a tendency to just silently battle your demons. But naming the fear — actually saying "yeah, this one's messing with my head" to your crew — takes some of its power away. You're not admitting defeat. You're processing it.
The Other Side of the Wall
Every athlete who's broken through a serious mental block describes the same thing on the other side: not just the stoke of landing it, but a shift in how they understand themselves. It's not just one trick. It's proof of concept. It rewires the story you tell yourself about what you're capable of.
